30 for 30 Spotlight: Ronda Hall

Hometown:
Kokomo, IN

Colleges Attended: I was an undergraduate at Indiana Central University (now University of Indianapolis). I earned a Master's Degree from UT Austin.

Job title(s) & Department(s): I was an advisor in Biological Sciences for 3 1/2 years, and I have been an advisor in Mathematics, Physics, & Astronomy for over 8 years.

How did you end up at UT?: After graduating with my Master's degree from UT and working as a social worker for over 10 years, I learned about the the profession of Academic Advising. I needed a change and was fortunate enough to be hired for a position in the College of Natural Sciences in 2002.

Favorite part of being in ACA: It keeps me up-to-date on programs and resources that may be beneficial for our students. And, the professional development days help keep my mind focused on what's important.

Anecdote: Peter Guzman started working in the Biological Sciences Advising Center a week after I did and listening to his stories kept me laughing. I also have fond memories of NACADA Conferences I was allowed to attend several years ago.

Advice for new advisors or new staff at UT: Try to learn what you can from experienced advisors around you but know that the fresh perspective you bring to the table is also valuable. Get to know about all the wonderful resources available on campus, both for our students and for staff.

Legacy:  I hope my students feel that I'm present with them while they're in my office, that I provide them with accurate information or try to find out what I don't know, and that I do what I can to assist them with being successful students.
